How young is too young to ask a child to tidy their room? Just shutting their door and telling them to sort their room out is too overwhelming for a wee one. However they ARE capable of helping out.
We all know that keeping on top of tidying is much easier than letting it get to a crazy pigsty… but kids are experts at creating that pigsty in record time. One playdate, or a hard out play session and the floor totally disappears! That can be really frustrating, and giving them the encouragement and routine early on to get their rooms in order will give them the tools they need to contribute more in the household as they grow up.
TIDY TOT TIP #1: GIVE THEM A HAND
Very small kids will feel supported and more focused if you get in there and give them a hand. But allocate them a space of their own to tidy, so they can feel proud of the space they just sorted out. Pick a corner for them (or 2), and let them know that you’ll be helping with the rest. Having you there will also stop them getting too distracted and playing instead of tidying - I’m sure y’all know what I’m talking about!
TIDY TOT TIP #2: GIVE EVERYTHING A “HOME”
It’s all very well asking a child to put something away, but they need to know where everything belongs first! Kids will relate if you try terms like “where should we give this a home” and then “shall we put that where it lives?” We love having a basket for soft toys, a basket or box for crafts and games, and another basket for dress-ups. And somehow there’s still that random pile of rebel toys that just don’t fit into any of those categories! I try to keep that basket a small one!
TIDY TOT TIP #3: MAKE TIDYING FUN!
Put on their favourite songs and dance your way tidy! It’s amazing how much fun you can have, and how fast the time goes when you’re getting your groove on with your wee one while you both tidy! Create lasting memories of fun tidying up time instead of it feeling like a punishment.
